Reinvention With Purpose: Lessons From Joe Alusma's Leap Into Property Media
Lessons in reinvention from Joe Alusma, who left a career in law enforcement to found Alusma Property Media, a real estate photography and video company in Southwest Florida.

In property markets around the world, from Dubai to Florida, the same truth holds: buyers decide quickly, and the visuals they see first shape what they believe a property is worth. Joe Alusma has built his business on that truth. But his story is just as much about reinvention, about how a career built in one field can become the foundation for success in another.
Second Careers, First-Rate Standards
Alusma is the founder of Alusma Property Media, a real estate photography and videography business in Southwest Florida. Before launching it, he spent seven years in law enforcement, including his final two years as a street gang detective. He retired in May 2026 to pursue a new professional chapter.
Many professionals contemplate a mid-career pivot. Fewer make one. For Alusma, the motivation was clear. As a husband and father, he wanted a career that would allow him to keep providing for his family without putting his life at risk. Photography and videography had been passions he pursued on the side for years. Building a business around them was the next step.
He is candid that the transition is about more than a job change. He describes it as following the path he believes God has prepared for him, and as an opportunity to build something meaningful for his family.

Transferable Strengths
What makes Alusma’s pivot instructive for entrepreneurs anywhere is how deliberately he carries his previous career into his new one. Seven years in law enforcement, he says, taught him discipline, accountability, attention to detail, and the importance of earning people’s trust. In a service business that depends on agents trusting a vendor with their listings and their reputations, those are competitive advantages.
The Business Model
Alusma Property Media serves real estate agents, brokers, homeowners, and property professionals across Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, and Fort Myers. The company offers professional HDR photography, cinematic property videos, aerial drone photography, and video content designed for listings and social media.
Its value proposition rests on two pillars: quality and dependability. Alusma combines professional equipment and creative storytelling with reliable turnaround times, including a 24-hour photo turnaround, and aims for a smooth experience from booking to delivery. The objective is to help clients elevate their marketing, attract potential buyers, and stand out in a competitive market.
He also uses content as a marketing engine of its own, sharing behind-the-scenes videos of his shoots filmed through his Meta smart glasses. The footage gives audiences a firsthand look at how properties are captured and what working in real estate media involves.
Resilience as a Foundation
Alusma’s resilience was tested long before he became a founder. In early 2022, he sustained a traumatic injury in the line of duty, including a fractured palate and a shattered right orbital floor. He underwent five surgeries and lived with double vision for two years. After a successful fifth surgery, he returned to duty and was promoted to the street gang unit.
He says the experience taught him the power of perseverance and faith, and that even the most difficult seasons can prepare a person for a greater purpose. His guiding verse captures it: “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26).
Vision and Legacy
Alusma’s goals include expanding throughout Southwest Florida, building strong relationships with agents and brokerages, and becoming a trusted name in real estate media. Beyond that, he wants to teach and train others to start their own real estate media businesses, creating a legacy that provides for his family, serves his community, and opens doors for others.
Advice for Those Considering a Leap
His counsel to entrepreneurs: trust the process, stay disciplined, and never lose sight of why you started. Be patient and consistent, learn from mistakes, and step outside your comfort zone even when the future feels uncertain. Treat people with integrity and focus on real value over quick wins.
“Your story can become one of your greatest strengths,” he wrote.
