Why Inspiring People Beats Persuading Them: Giovannie Espiritu's Lessons for Leaders

Filmmaker and keynote speaker Giovannie Espiritu explains why leaders get better results by inspiring people than by persuading them.

Why Inspiring People Beats Persuading Them: Giovannie Espiritu's Lessons for Leaders

Every leader knows how to get a yes. Far fewer know how to get an enthusiastic one. That difference is the focus of Giovannie Espiritu, an award-winning Filipino-American writer, director, actor, and creative mentor whose signature keynote, The Art of the Enthusiastic Yes, draws on more than twenty years in the entertainment industry.

Participation Is Not Inspiration

Espiritu, who runs Her Hunger Media, works with entrepreneurs and organizations looking to strengthen communication, collaboration, and human connection. She sees a common gap in how teams operate.

“Getting people to participate isn’t the same as inspiring them to want to participate,” she says. Rather than relying on pressure, obligation, or persuasion, she helps leaders create the conditions for authentic enthusiasm.

Her definition is direct. “A genuine yes is something we create together, not something we extract from someone else.”

Lessons From the Set

Espiritu’s ideas about leadership were formed in a demanding environment. Over two decades she has worked as an actor, writer, director, producer, and acting coach. She has built productions, developed talent, and brought people together around a shared vision, often with limited resources.

Her credits include directing Oscar nominee Eric Roberts and international star Bai Ling, coaching performers for Pixar, and acting roles in Young Sheldon, NCIS: Origins, and 9-1-1: Lone Star. She created, wrote, and directed Maid to Shine, a six-episode Filipino romantic comedy series distributed internationally through Viva One, and she taught the workshop “The Rhythms of Sitcom” through the SAG Conservatory for three years.

On a production, she learned, people do their best work when they feel seen, heard, valued, and genuinely excited to participate. That insight translates directly to business.

The Power of No

One of the more unusual parts of Espiritu’s message for leaders is her emphasis on what she calls the Sacred No. “A genuine yes is only possible when someone is free to say no,” she says.

For founders and executives, that means giving people real choice and also protecting their own focus. “Not every opportunity is ours to take, and not every request deserves a yes,” Espiritu says. “The magic happens when we have the freedom to choose what genuinely lights us up.”

Her advice to entrepreneurs echoes the point: “Not every opportunity deserves a yes. Protect your energy for the things that matter.”

A Global Perspective on Story

Espiritu’s work has an international reach. Maid to Shine is distributed internationally through Viva One, and she has been recognized by the Filipina Women’s Network as one of the 100 Most Influential Filipinas. She is a Silver Telly Award winner, with recognition including Legacy and the Hyundai Evolve Innovation Award, a 2025 TOFA honoree, and a 2024 Women Inspiring Nevada honoree.

She is also a member of the Producers Guild of America, the Television Academy, and the Alliance of Women Directors.

What She Offers Organizations

Through Her Hunger Media, Espiritu offers keynotes, interactive workshops, and creative mentorship. Her work explores authentic connection, creative courage, communication, leadership, and collaboration, and she is expanding her educational offerings to bring The Art of the Enthusiastic Yes to a wider audience.

She is also developing Into the Motherland, a documentary exploring five generations of Filipinas and what each generation inherits and carries forward.

Advice for Builders

For entrepreneurs building something new, Espiritu’s guidance is practical. “You don’t need permission to begin, and you don’t need to have everything figured out before you take the first step,” she says. “Be resourceful, stay curious, build genuine relationships, and learn by doing.”

She believes an unconventional background can be an asset rather than a liability. Her own career was built without a traditional educational or industry roadmap. “Your unconventional path might actually be your competitive advantage,” she says.

Espiritu is welcoming opportunities to speak at conferences and leadership events, facilitate organizational workshops, and collaborate with organizations that want to build more inspired, connected communities. Learn more at herhunger.com or connect on LinkedIn.
